WHAT IS THE RIDES FOR SENIORS PROGRAM?

• The River East Council for Seniors is offering the Rides for Seniors program to seniors 55+ who have difficulty in safely accessing other forms of transportation. Rides are provided on an availability basis Monday to Friday, daytime only.

WHO CAN USE THIS SERVICE?

• Individuals must be 55+
• Individuals must reside within the geographical areas of North Kildonan, East Kildonan, and Elmwood. This includes postal codes R2K, R2G, R2L.
• Individuals must be able to walk independently, however, canes and walkers are acceptable.

WHO WILL PROVIDE ME WITH THE ASSISTED RIDE?

• Your driver will be a volunteer. He or she will have been interviewed and trained by the Community Resource Coordinator of the River East Council for Seniors.

WILL I BE GUARANTEED ASSISTANCE EVERY TIME I CALL?

• Rides will be provided on a first come basis only. Unfortunately we are unable to guarantee that someone will be able to assist you every time you call. This will depend on the availability of the volunteers.

WILL THIS SERVICE COST ME ANYTHING?

• Donations to cover the volunteer's cost of gasoline will be requested from clients as follows: $8.00 return to destinations within River East boundaries, $10.00 return to destinations outside of the River East boundaries but within city limits.
• Parking costs are also the client's responsibility.

HOW DO I MAKE ARRANGEMENTS FOR A RIDE?

1. First, you need to make arrangements with the program coordinator to fill out an application form. This can be done with you in your home or by mail.

2. Once you have filled out the initial application, you can call 667-6812 to request a ride. Often there will be an answering machine to take your call.

3. Provide as much advance notice as possible. A minimum of two to three days advance notice is required. This does not include weekends. Example: If you need assistance Monday morning, arrangements need to be made no later than Wednesday of the week before the date.

4. If you need the volunteer to wait for you during your outing, please make this request known at the time of the booking.

5. If no one is available to take your call, please leave a message with your name and phone number as well as some information about the day and time of your request and we'll get back to you shortly.

6. We will call you back to confirm whether or not it is possible to find a volunteer to assist you in your outing.
