The Fort Garry Historical Society is a non-profit organization formed in 1971 to foster the preservation and, interpret and protect, the heritage of Fort Garry.
Accomplishments
- Rescued heritage homes and created the museum component now at
St. Norbert Provincial Heritage Park.
- Acquired artifacts to furnish the homes and continues to work with the Province of Manitoba to develop the park to its full potential.
- Initiated the refurbishment of Toiler Park in 1990.
Sponsored the alumni reunion of General Steele School in 1991.
- Published a book about the origin of selected street names in the former RM of Fort Garry “Revisiting St. Norbert: A South Winnipeg Community” (1996) by Corinne
Tellier.
- Prepares historical displays for schools and libraries.
- Published a book of stories from the History Gathering collection – “Fort Garry Remembered” (2000)
- Published its second book of stories "Fort Garry Remembered II"
(2004)
Activities
- The Story Gathering Committee collects stories for publication – stories of the old days as told by residents of Fort Garry and St. Norbert.
- Events are held to display memorabilia and to hear and tell stories.
- Meetings: General Meeting in the Fall and the Annual Meeting in February – presentations, stories and guest speakers.
- Celebrations are held at St. Norbert Provincial Heritage Park during the summer months.
